The small township of Littlehampton was not selected at the time of the Special Survey in 1839-40 but remained Crown Land until it was laid out in 1849 by Benjamin Gray. He derived the name Little Hampton in namesake of his home town in Sussex, England. In years to follow the town’s name was to become Littlehampton, as we know it today.
By the end of the 19th century Littlehampton had become a town of industry with local farms and factories generating a diverse range of offerings including clay bricks, bacon and smallgoods, fruit preserves, fresh vegetables, dairy produce, tobacco, beer and more.
